Maseno School emerged as the champions of Kisumu County School Rugby 15s after defeating Nyabondo 12-8 in the final on Friday.
The Jambazi’s secured their victory by capitalizing on penalties, with Austine Sandagi scoring an early penalty to give them an early lead. Although Nyabondo responded with an unconverted penalty, they were only able to take a 5-3 lead until halftime.
In the second half, Maseno’s Winston Ngulu stepped up to the plate, drilling in three consecutive penalties to give his team a 12-5 lead. Nyabondo managed to grab a penalty to narrow the scoreline to 12-8, but it was too little too late.
Coach Sebastian Makalek praised his team’s performance and expressed confidence that if they stick to their game plan, they can make it to the Kenya Secondary School Games. “When the team delivers their game plan to the fullest, they have the potential to reach the nationals,” he said.
Both Maseno and Nyabondo will go on to represent Kisumu County in the upcoming Nyanza Region matches, which are scheduled to take place at Kisii School in April.
