Kenya Cup Champions Kabras RFC, have been named Team of the Year at the Sports Personality of the Year Awards.
The team, coached by South African Carlos Katywa, had a successful 2022 season, winning their first double since being promoted in 2014.
This included their first Kenya Cup title since 2016, achieved by defeating Menengai Oilers 34-28, and a retention of the Enterprise Cup after a close 9-6 victory over KCB in the final played at RFUEA Grounds.
Kabras was nominated for the award alongside Menengai Oilers, Kenya Simbas, and Kenya Under 20. The side beat 4x100m Relay team (Athletics) and National Cereals and Produce Board Handball team that had been shortlisted for the award.
Kenya Lionesses on the other hand finished as runners up in the Women’s team of the year category which was won by KCB volleyball team.
Lionesses were nominated for the award after impressing in the Rugby Africa Women’s cup held in Uganda in November 2022.
The Sports Personality of the Year Award is an annual award ceremony that honors outstanding achievement in sports by individuals and teams from Kenya. It recognizes the top athletes, coaches, and teams for their performances over the previous calendar year. The nominees for the award are typically announced in the weeks leading up to the ceremony, and the winners are determined by a panel of experts and a public vote.
The awarding ceremony was held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre in Nairobi.
