The 2023 Uganda Premiership season will have a new addition to the awards with the Man of the Match set to receive UGX 100,000, equivalent to about Kshs 3,360.

The season is set to kick off on Saturday, with five matches lined up. The season was officially launched on Thursday with the presence of sponsor Nile Special.

The introduction of the cash prize for the Man of the Match is a response to the complaints from the previous season, where the players were only awarded beer from Nile Special. Last season, medals were introduced as an award instead.

“We know that these players give everything and put their bodies on the line. It takes gut and grit to actually put up such a show,” said John Paul Ssemakula, the Connections Manager Nile Breweries Limited was quoted by Sports Nation UG

“So, for every game, we know that there will be someone who will be unmatched, someone who will put up more than everyone and that someone who will deserve to be rewarded.

“Like we have done in the past we will continue to reward them, and this time we have put some money to it, we have put Sh100000 for every man of the match. And there is an accolade as well because we want you to be remembered as well.”

The company has pumped in Sh2.68 billion in the league for three years. With clubs set to receive cash from the company to help them deal with challenges they have had with finances and to prepare for the season.
