Former Mwamba Rugby Club winger Augustine Cheruiyot has shifted from rugby to athletics.

The winger is switching to athletics and will compete in the 400 and 200-metre races. Cheruiyot who played recently played for Embu RFC in the just concluded  National Sevens Circuit confirmed the development to the Scrummage Africa and stated that he is available to support rugby as medical personnel or in other capacities.

Moving

“I am moving completely from competitive rugby, but I will, however, support rugby maybe as a medic or in other ways,”  he told the Scrummage Africa.

“I believe the track is where am strong and what am built for. I think I have a chance in track and field,”  he added.

Editor’s pick:

When asked if his decision was influenced by former rugby player Ferdinard Omanyala, Cheruiyot praised the Commonwealth Games Gold Medalist but insisted that it was purely personal.

Personal

“This is a personal choice, but he has (Omanyala) truly given us hope and led the way. As a rugby player transitioning to track and field, having played as a winger serves as a stepping stone,” he added.

“I was raised in Iten and watched these athletes, and I trained and tested myself with them during the COVID period. I was to make this decision earlier but decided to wait for a season. I decided to change after the Sevens season ended. I will also assist as a medic and advocate for a clean sport,”  he concluded.
