St Patrick Iten Boys high school are the Elgeyo Marakwet County Rugby Champions after a 24-0 over Lelboinet in the final played on Sunday.
The Saints’ Benedict Oyare was the star, bagging a hattrick as they thrashed the newcomers Lelboinet to book the single slot in rugby 7s.
Oyare touched down first for the saints with Mathangui Wachira adding the extras to give the champions 7-0 lead. Oyare the beat the opponents defence for his brace with Maxwell Shigali converting for 14-0 lead.
After break, Oyare was at it again for a hattrick with Shigali failing to add the extras for 19-0 lead. Wachira failed to convert Rob Taboi’s try in the dying minutes of the game for a 24-0 win.
St Patrick’s Iten head coach Bernard Indasi said that they did not expect to meet Lelboinet but his fomer school Simotwo, who were the championships favourite.
“We missed a chance to reach East Africa in 15s and this is our time to shine in 7s. we had an easy win against Lelboinet. The boys were ready for any team at the finals and they delivered to the maximum,” Indasi told Scrummage Africa.
At the semifinals, the champions were 19-07 winners against Tambach while Lelboinet beat Simotwo with slim victory of 7-5.
