Kenya Lionesses 15s have been nominated for the Sports personality of the year Awards (SOYA) scheduled for January 20, 2023.
The Lionesses were successful in 2022, and qualified for the 2023 Rugby Africa Women’s Cup Championship. It was after they emerged top in Pool B of the Rugby Africa Cup in the November International season matches held in Uganda.
The Lionesses defeated Uganda 23-3 at Wankulukuku Stadium in Kampala after defeating Zambia 36-17 to earn nine points.
They join their coach Dennis Mwanja who has been nominated alongside Menengai Oilers Head Coach Gibson Weru for the coach of the year award as well as Speedster Janet Okello who has also been shortlisted for the female player of the year award.
Other rugby teams that have made the cut include Kenya Simbas, Kenya Cup and Enterprise Cup champions Kabras RFC and National 7s Circuit champions Menengai Oilers.
The Sports Personality of the Year Award is an annual award ceremony that honors outstanding achievement in sports by individuals and teams from Kenya. It recognizes the top athletes, coaches, and teams for their performances over the previous calendar year. The nominees for the award are typically announced in the weeks leading up to the ceremony, and the winners are determined by a panel of experts and a public vote.
The awarding ceremony will be held at at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre in Nairobi.
