Kenya U20 7s set for comeback to nurture future Shujaa and Morans stars

Kenya Rugby Union Director of Rugby and Pathway Manager Paul Odera has revealed that there will be a Kenya U20 7s squad that that will be instrumental in creating a clear pathway for young players to progress to the Shujaa and Morans teams.

Speaking to the Kenya Rugby Union official portal after the announcement of the 48-man squad, which is expected to report to camp on Monday, Odera confirmed that plans are in place to select a Kenya U20 7s team for the first time in several years.

Among the fresh young talents included in the current squad are Nahashon Mwangemi, Jackson Siketi, Amon Bwambok, Mike Lukusi, and Kevin Ochieng, who represent the next generation of sevens stars.

“We will be able to select an U20 7s squad for the very first time to give a pathway to our young players on their journey to the Shujaa and Morans teams,” said Odera.

The last time a Kenya U20 7s team was assembled was in 2021 for the Safari 7s, featuring players like Amon Wamalwa, David Williams, and Lucky Ishimwe, who went on to win the National 7s Circuit with Kenya Harlequin in 2024.

Other notable names from that squad include Tyson Maina, who has since represented the Kenya Simbas, and Brian Odengo, who has played for Kenya 7s and Morans.

Kennedy Wanyoike, Felix Chacha, Gabriel Ayimba, Arnold Onzere, Paywick Munoko, Charles Odhiambo, and Alvin Mutachi were also part of the 2021 setup.

The Kenya U20 program (Chipu) has already proven its value to the national teams, with players like Timothy Omela, Samuel Asati, Barry Young, John Okoth, Andy Cole Omolo, Ibrahim Ayoo, Wilhite Mususi, and Edward Mwaura graduating to the Kenya Simbas, representing the country in recent international qualifiers.
