SRC suspends remaining Zimbabwe Rugby Union Board Members

The Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) has suspended the remaining members of the Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU) National Executive Board and National Executive Committee from all forms of rugby administration in the country.

The suspension covers all administrative activities, including but not limited to, holding office under the Zimbabwe Rugby Union.

Zimbabwe Rugby Union suspension decision

The decision follows a resolution passed by the Board of Commissioners of the Sports and Recreation Commission on September 9, 2025.

“The Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) wishes to advise the public and rugby stakeholders that the remaining members of the Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU) National Executive Board and the National Executive Committee have been suspended from all forms of rugby administration and activities in Zimbabwe, including but not limited to holding office under the Zimbabwe Rugby Union,” read the statement.

The statement further clarified that the suspension is in line with section 30 (1)(b) and (c)(i), read together with section 19 (a), (b), and (c), and paragraph 23 of the second schedule of the Sports and Recreation Commission Act (Chapter 25:15). It will remain in force until the next Zimbabwe Rugby Union elections.

EDITOR’S PICKS:

The SRC highlighted that the ZRU, as a registered National Association, failed to comply with section 29(8)(b) of the Sports and Recreation Commission Act. A show cause order was issued on September 4, 2025, leading to the resignation of eight board members. The remaining members failed to respond, prompting the SRC to invoke section 30 of the Act.

The SRC assured the public that it will soon communicate the strategic direction for the future of Zimbabwe Rugby. This suspension comes months after ZRU qualified for Rugby World Cup.

In May, the ZRU suspended its President, Mr. Losson Mtongwiza, and Zimbabwe Women’s Rugby Chairperson, Ms. Regina Mwanandiwa, after allegations of harassment and financial mismanagement surfaced following the Lady Sables’ return from the Rugby Africa Women’s Cup qualifiers in Côte d’Ivoire.
