Samuel Ovwamu’s rugby journey takes a major step forward this Saturday as he prepares to make his debut for the Kenya Simbas in their Rugby Africa Cup third-place playoff against Algeria.

Ovwamu has been named in a much-rotated Kenya Simbas squad by head coach Jerome Paarwater, with kickoff set for 12:00 p.m.

The changes provide an opportunity for several new faces who have seen limited game time this tournament and for Ovwamu, it marks the culmination of years of steady growth in the game.

“It’s an incredible honor to be part of the Simbas squad. Wearing the national jersey means everything to me, and I’m grateful for the opportunity,” Ovwamu told KRU Media.

The Menengai Oilers centre began his rugby journey at Vihiga Boys High School before moving to Daystar Falcons, where he spent four years developing his skills. His steady rise through Kenya’s domestic rugby scene has been shaped by dedication and perseverance.

Recently, Ovwamu completed a month-long training stint in South Africa, an experience that had a major impact on his development.

“Playing with different clubs pushed me to grow as a player. The intensity and discipline there really challenged me in the best way,” he reflected.

With his focus now firmly on the future, Ovwamu remains driven to make the most of his opportunity with the national team.
