The Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) has announced the appointment of Moses Ndale as the Acting Chairman of the Union, following the resignation of Alexander “Sasha” Mutai.

Ndale, who has served as KRU Vice Chairman since his election in September 2022, will assume leadership in an acting capacity for a period of 14 days.

During this time, the KRU Board is expected to convene and elect a new Chairman from among its current members, in accordance with the Union’s governance constitution.

KRU confirmed the development in a statement on Friday, 30th May 2025, following a heated Special General Meeting (SGM) held at the RFUEA Grounds.

“KRU wishes to announce the resignation of Mr. Alexander Mutai – Sasha, from his position as Chairman of the Union, effective immediately. Alexander tendered his resignation in a Special General Meeting that was held at the RFUEA grounds on Friday 30th May 2025,” the statement read.

Mutai, who was elected unopposed as KRU Chairman in 2023, has faced mounting pressure in recent months, with fresh calls for his ouster culminating in the motion presented at Friday’s SGM.

In his farewell address to club chairmen, Mutai thanked the rugby fraternity for the opportunity to serve and highlighted key milestones during his tenure.

“I can read the room. I want to thank you for giving me the opportunity. I offered my best. I’m not a good politician—that’s definitely one of my flaws. To cajole is not for me. I’m not a dictator, but I have strong convictions. If I believe in something, I pursue it,” he said.

“I believe we’ve had success in the last two years. After we were relegated, we bounced back, secured sponsorships, and the Simbas are currently in South Africa preparing for the July qualifiers.”

Sensing the tone of the meeting, Mutai concluded his remarks by referencing former KRU Chairman Mwangi Muthee, stating:

“As you said you own the players and reading the mood of the room, I will follow the person I look up to, Mwangi Muthee. I hereby tender my resignation as Chairman of KRU.”

Throughout the SGM, Mutai was pressed to address several contentious issues, including the appointment of the Kenya 7s Team Manager, accusations of authoritarian leadership, and a letter sent to directors regarding international travel.

He also raised concerns about the legitimacy of certain board members holding office, among other governance issues.
