Kabras RFC Head Coach Carlos Katywa bags April Coach of the Month award

Kabras RFC Head Coach Carlos Katywa has been named the Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK) Coach of the Month for April.

The recognition comes after Katywa led Kabras RFC to their fourth consecutive Kenya Cup title, edging Menengai Oilers 27-26 in a thrilling final at the Kakamega Showground.

Since his appointment as head coach, Katywa has overseen 39 matches, maintaining a 100% win record at the helm of the team.

Just two weeks after their Kenya Cup triumph—and despite Katywa’s absence from the dugout due to his commitments with the Kenya U20 side—Kabras RFC successfully defended the Enterprise Cup title for the fifth consecutive time.

EDITOR’S PICKS:

Under Katywa’s leadership, Kabras have gone an astonishing 53 matches unbeaten across all 15s competitions, cementing their place as one of the most dominant sides in recent Kenyan rugby history.

Katywa joined Kabras RFC in the 2021/22 season as the forwards coach. That season, Kabras ended a six-year wait to reclaim the Kenya Cup. He was promoted to head coach at the start of the 2022/23 season, and the club has since achieved a domestic double in four consecutive seasons.

Last month, Katywa narrowly missed out on the SJAK accolade, which went to Mildred Cheche, the Kenya U20 women’s head coach, who was recognized as Coach of the Month for March.
