Currie Cup first division standings after round five matches

Kenya Simbas registered its first win in the 2022 Currie Cup beating bottom-placed Border Bulldogs in a match played at Davidson Stadium on Saturday evening.  

Tries by Timothy Okwemba (2), Brian Waraba, Vincent Onyala and Bethuel Anami helped Kenya Simbas end their three-match losing run in the competition.

The win saw Paul Odera charge pick five points following a bonus-point victory. The win took their tally in the campaign to seven points.  They, however, stay ninth on the log having scored 103 points and conceded 151.

Border Bulldogs are placed bottom on the log with no points having lost all of their opening five matches.  Zimbabwe Goshawks picked their second win of the campaign to move to eight points and sit eighth on the standings just a point above Simbas.

Griffons are top of the log with 25 points having registered a 100% win record in this campaign.  Valke are second with 20 points thanks to four wins and one loss. Eastern Province are third on the log with 16 points following three wins.

Black Lions close the top four with 14 points from five matches played.  Leopards and Boland Kavaliers are tied on 10 points at positions five and six. Eagles have nine points.

The matches are set to countinue this weekend with Kenya Simbas set to play their next match on 20 May against Boland Kavaliers. They will then Eagles seven days later.

The Simbas scheduled to their final two matches of the competition in Nairobi. They will play Leopards at RFUEA Grounds on 4 June 2022 and will later tackle Eastern Province Elephants at the venue on 11 June 2022 in matches dubbed ‘Currie Cup Nairobi Series’.

The Simbas are using the Currie Cup matches to prepare for the Rugby Africa Cup 2022, which doubles as the final round of Rugby World Cup 2023 qualifying for teams on the continent.  The matches will take place in France between 1-10 July, 2022.
