Kabete Stallions head coach Elly Mukaizi has observed positive developments within his team as they prepare for a KRU Championship qualification push in the upcoming season.
The Stallions have had an impressive run in the Impala Floodlit tournament, eliminating Zetech Oaks in a dominant display and defeating Impala Boks last weekend to reach the final of the Varsity category.
Mukaizi on Stallions performance
In an interview with Scrummage Africa, Mukaizi, a former KCB player, acknowledged that while his players are not yet at their peak, he has seen encouraging signs and aims to refine their performance.
“I’ll give it to them; we’re not there yet. We’ve just started, but I’ll take the positives. We’re seeing some progress with our pod system and other strategies. In some areas, it’s clicking, though not everywhere. We’ll keep working to polish it,” he said.

Mukaizi emphasized that their goal is to qualify for the KRU Championship, and he’s been focused on testing all players during this pre-season. With several new faces joining the squad after the sevens season—including some players who haven’t played rugby in two years and others fresh out of high school—Mukaizi is pleased with their eagerness to learn.
“As coaches and players, our target is Championship qualification, and we’re using this period to test everyone. After the sevens, we added new players—some are returning after years away from rugby, and some are recent high school graduates. It’s a work in progress, but they’re trying to learn,” he added.
Valuable experience
Facing off against higher-ranked teams has been a valuable experience for the Stallions. Mukaizi highlighted that Zetech Oaks, the current Nationwide champions, recently earned a promotion, while Impala Boks play in the ESS.
“These have been good tests. Zetech are now Nationwide champions, and Boks are part of Impala’s ESS. It’s been a solid preseason, and the boys are ready,” he said.
As the Stallions head into Saturday’s final against Rift Valley Varsities, Mukaizi is placing the focus on his players’ drive to win.
“I won’t put much pressure on them; I want them to enjoy themselves. As a coach, I want to win, but it’s up to them. I know their mentality—if they want to win, they will,” he concluded.
