Shoogun Rugby head coach Mike Friday has expressed admiration for Kenya 7s and Daystar Falcons speedster Patrick Odongo.
Odongo made a remarkable breakthrough into the national team in 2023, despite playing in the KRU Championship. His impressive performances in the National 7s Circuit earned him a spot on the squad.

Since then, Odongo has made his mark, becoming Shujaa’s top scorer with seven tries, including a crucial score in the final that secured Kenya’s 17-12 victory over South Africa in Zimbabwe, clinching Olympic qualification.
The rising star continued to shine in international competitions, playing a key role in the 2023 Safari 7s. He further announced his arrival on the global stage by scoring 11 tries in the Challenger Series opener in Dubai, where Kenya emerged champions. In the 2024 Safari 7s, Odongo once again played a pivotal role as Shujaa secured their third consecutive title.
Mike Friday, who previously coached Shujaa, likened Odongo’s talent to that of USA 7s legend Perry Baker in his early days.
“I love watching Patrick Odongo, the winger—it’s like watching a young Perry Baker. He’s very fast and strong. They’ve got great athleticism in the team,” Friday told Scrummage Africa.

The coach also praised the positive culture and energy within the Kenya 7s camp, emphasizing the importance of maintaining that spirit as they prepare for future tournaments.
“Andrew (Amonde) and the coaches have built a culture I love. They play with power, physicality, and joy. The energy they bring is fantastic, and they need to embrace that and continue on this journey,” Friday added.
With Odongo quickly establishing himself as a key player for Shujaa, Kenya 7s fans will be eager to see how the team performs in upcoming competitions, starting with the next leg in Dubai.
