Kenya 7s head coach Kevin Wambua expressed his delight after guiding his side to first and third-place finishes at the Safari 7s tournament, despite missing key players.

Wambua led Shujaa to their third consecutive Safari 7s title and saw Morans secure third place, despite the absence of skippers Vincent Onyala and Anthony Omondi.

The tournament, held in Machakos for the first time, provided an opportunity for Wambua to test new talent.

“We had a few injuries, some of our key players were on rehab, and I had to rest them. I’m just happy that I was able to play most of the players who didn’t get more minutes in the Series. The Morans squad was made up of guys who were in the set last season and some who played well in the circuit. I’m happy with the process and results. Finishing first and third is no mean feat,” Wambua told Scrummage Africa..

Wambua explained that building depth within the squad was a key target, which he believes was accomplished.

“Our plan was to build depth, and we have achieved that. Having two sides in an international tournament finishing first and third with about half or three-quarters of your squad out is good for me – it’s me ticking the boxes. I’m happy and hopeful that we can sort a few of our in-house issues so that we are good to go when we resume training after a week,” he added.

Kenya 7s coach on competition

The coach acknowledged the high level of competition at the event, praising teams like Zimbabwe, Lions, and Shogun.

“There were some quality teams – Lions were playing good, Zimbabwe was playing with a good skill set, and Shogun with Mike Friday was always going to be a test for us. I’m just happy both teams got to the podium and didn’t disappoint. Both teams managing a podium finish is the best birthday gift a coach can get. I’m happy with the progress and looking forward to the hard work that awaits us in the Series,” he said.
