Joshua Chisanga to make rugby comeback in Kenya Cup after long hiatus

Burly forward Joshua Chisanga is set to make his rugby comeback after being out of action since the 2021 Kenya Cup season.

Chisanga, who signed with Kenya Harlequin in November 2020, featured in the Charity Cup defeat to Kabras RFC, a game that marked rugby’s return after a COVID-19 break. He also played in the early matches of that season, including a narrow 35-32 loss to KCB.

Speaking to Scrummage Africa, Chisanga shared that he took time off to focus on personal growth and balancing his commitments.

“I took some time off to focus on building my business, 48 Trade, and at some point, playing and building that became complicated. I didn’t feel I was applying myself to the game as I could and hadn’t found a balance. So the best decision was to step aside from the game and make sure I found that balance and be in a position where I could give everything,” he said.

The former Newcastle Falcons forward confirmed that he has now found stability and is ready to make a comeback.

“I’m back, and I have found the balance. I’m in a place where I can see clearly—before that, the lines were blurry. I love the game, and when it came to deciding between the game and business, it was a tough decision. Now my priorities are straight, and I know what comes first and when I can sacrifice and compromise,” he added.

Chisanga admitted that staying away from the sport was difficult, with every game he watched reminding him of his love for the sport.

“I was presented with this opportunity where I had to make the decision. Watching rugby became difficult, and every single time I watched the game, I felt like I still had some seasons. It has been a slow but sure comeback. I kept thinking maybe next season, maybe the season after, but finally, the season has come where I feel like the balance is there, and I could give it something,” he reflected.

Having watched from the sidelines for years, Chisanga now feels well-prepared to make an impact on the pitch for Kenya Harlequin.

“Honestly, we are here to enjoy the game. We have been watching from the sidelines for four years, and we feel like we know where to plug ourselves in to make the impact that we have been missing since that time,” he stated.

The forward is excited about Kenya Harlequin’s prospects, believing his return will strengthen the team.

“Expect nothing but some fireworks. The boys are training, the team is looking really good. It’s a good team, and with us in addition, it’s going to be wonderful. I can’t wait to see what becomes of it,” he concluded.

Chisanga has represented several clubs, including Homeboyz RFC and Poland’s top-tier Ekstraliga side RC Orkan Sochaczew. His return is expected to bring added firepower and leadership to Kenya Harlequin who missed the semis last season
