Tributes have poured in after the tragic death of 24-year-old South African club rugby player Ashwill Sauls, who passed away after suffering devastating lung injuries from a freak tackle during a game.
Sauls, a fullback for Robertson Rangers near Cape Town, fell heavily during a match against Montagu on Saturday. The impact from the tackle resulted in multiple broken ribs and a severely punctured lung.
He was rushed to the hospital but was tragically declared dead on arrival.
Mark Alexander, president of SA Rugby, extended his condolences to Sauls’ family, friends, and teammates.
“It is with profound sadness that we learned of the tragic passing of Ashwill Sauls, a dedicated and talented rugby player from the Robertson Rangers,” said Alexander.

“Ashwill’s untimely death following a fatal tackle during a friendly match against Montagu RFC has left the entire rugby community in shock and mourning.
At just 24 years old, Ashwill had been a vital part of the Rangers for the past five years, showcasing not only his skill on the field but also his sportsmanship and passion for the game. His loss is deeply felt by his teammates, coaches, and all who knew him,” he added.
