Eight teams have confirmed their participation in the 2024 Safari 7s tournament in both the men’s and women’s categories, with the competition set for October 2024.
Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) Commercial Director Harriet Okatch revealed the participating teams during the Tusker Sponsorship launch event held at the EABL headquarters adding that 16 teams are expected for the Men’s competition.
Safari 7s teams
Kenya’s national rugby team will field two squads: Shujaa and Morans. Regular participants such as Uganda Cranes and Shogun Rugby (formerly Samurai Rugby) are set to compete again. Tropics 7s and Zimbabwe will also be returning, with Malliot set to join the lineup.

“So far, the confirmed teams are Shujaa, Morans, Uganda Cranes, Zimbabwe, Qatar, Shogun Rugby, Tropics 7s, and Malliot,” Okatch announced.
“For the women’s category, Kenya Lionesses and Cubs will lead the pack, with Uganda Lady Cranes, Zimbabwe, Tunisia, Tropics 7s, Spanish Barbarians, and Shogun also confirmed,” she added.

Speaking on the choice of Machakos as the new venue for this year’s edition, Okatch emphasized the importance of showcasing different sporting destinations beyond Nairobi.
“Safari 7s is an international tournament, and it’s important to showcase Kenya as a sporting destination. This year, we are in Machakos, but next year, who knows where we’ll go?”

She also highlighted Machakos’ appeal, citing its proximity to Nairobi and the availability of good accommodation.
“People need to know that Machakos isn’t just close to Nairobi; it offers great accommodations and a warm, welcoming atmosphere.”
