Kakamega School rugby 7s have ended an 11-year wait for the Kakamega County 7s title with a 17-10 win over St. Peters Mumias in the final, played at St. Peters Mumias

The Barbarians had last won the 7s title in 2013 when their golden generation on dominated by winning all the 7s and 15s trophies, defending the titles they had scooped in 2012.

Kakamega School competitiveness in 7s

After 2013, Kakamega’s competitiveness in sevens declined as they shifted focus to 15s due to changes in laws that saw both 7s and 15s school games played in one term.

They focused on 15s and won five major 15s titles, the latest being in 2019 when they won the 15s title nationally and the East African Title.

Despite having a relatively young squad, Kakamega came stronger and landed three tries to see off St. Peters Mumias. Bryson Makori, Austin Shummah, and Festus Iman scored tries, with Ryan Juma adding one conversion.

In the quarter-finals, Kakamega eliminated Ingotse with a 19-5 victory to reach the last four.

Speaking after the match, Games Master Amos Wamanga hailed his team’s performance and thanked Principal Dr. Julius Mambili for supporting the side.

“It has been a long time since we won sevens, and I want to give kudos to the boys for giving their best. Despite having an inexperienced squad with mostly Form 1s and Form 3s and a few Form 4s, we did it.”

“I would like to thank the Principal for allowing us to partner with Scrummage Africa for Katch 7s. The tournament gave us good exposure and helped us identify areas for improvement. He also supported us in having more friendlies, which is why we have improved.”
