Kenya Harlequin back Leeon Nyang has announced that he is stepping away from active rugby following medical advice after a recent injury.

Nyang made a strong return to the Quins squad during the Christie 7s, where he impressed with five tries and over six conversions, helping the team register an improved performance this season.

However, his journey was cut short at the Embu 7s when he suffered another bad fall following a tackle during the fifth-place playoff against Kabras RFC.

The injury saw him forced out, and after medical assessment, the doctor advised him to step away from the sport.

Speaking to Scrummage Africa, Nyang described the decision as the hardest of his career as he had the National Team dream.

“This is the toughest call I’ve had to make considering I had a dream, and I guess this time no amount of heart can outrun it. The mind needs rest, even if the heart still burns. I’m stepping back, but never away.

“I know there is so much for me in and with this game, but the playing bit has to pause. I ain’t going nowhere—it’s just a break. The doctor’s call is clear this time: ‘no more, or you risk losing it all.’”

Nyang began his rugby journey at St. Joseph Rapogi, before moving to Egerton Wasps and later Nakuru RFC.

He eventually joined Kenya Harlequin, where he became a key figure in the squad that ended a 12-year wait by winning the National 7s Circuit. He also featured prominently for Quins in the Kenya Cup.
