Meru RFC has announced the postponement of the 3rd edition of the annual Meru Sevens rugby tournament, which was originally scheduled to take place from 21st–22nd June 2025.
In an official statement, the club cited the prohibitively high cost of hiring Kinoru Stadium which was the planned venue as the main reason for the cancellation. The club stated that the charges, communicated on short notice, were beyond the club’s current budget capacity, making it impossible to proceed as scheduled.
“As a community-based team, our goal was to use this tournament to generate revenue to support future rugby development and ensure long-term sustainability, rather than continously relying on fundraisers. Unfortunately, financial burden of securing the venue has forced us to seek alternative dates,” said Victor Luganu Sambuli, Secretary general of Meru RFC.

The Meru Sevens set to enter its’ third edition this year has steadily grown in stature and has become an important pre-season event, with teams using it to warm up for the National sevens circuit, which is set to kick off in July.
In the 2024 edition, held from 15th to 16th June at Kinoru Stadium, 16 teams battled for glory. Rugby on the Road (RoR) emerged champions with an emphatic 33-0 win over Embu RFC in the final.
The postponement of the 2025 edition is a setback for teams eager to sharpen their squads ahead of the national circuit, but Meru RFC has assured stakeholders that they are actively mobilizing resources and exploring new dates for the event.
“We are currently exploring alternative dates as we mobilize additional resources to meet the venue costs, and we will provide updates as soon as a way forward is confirmed ,” added Sambuli.
