After a successful debut, the second edition of the Scrummage Katch 7s is set to take place on May 17–18, 2025, at Kakamega School, a former powerhouse in Kenyan school rugby.
This year’s tournament promises to attract more teams following the success of the inaugural edition. Tournament Director Brian Mwenje is calling on schools across the country to seize the opportunity and test themselves against top-tier competition.
“As we saw last year, Vihiga High School—the boys’ champions—went on to reach the KSSSA finals and clinch the East African title,” Mwenje said. “In the girls’ category, both finalists progressed to the national and regional finals, with St. Joseph’s Girls winning all their finals.”
The inaugural edition served as a valuable platform for preparation, with participating schools using match footage to fine-tune tactics and address weaknesses. At least four teams from last year’s event went on to reach the KSSSA nationals.

Among the standout performers was Wilson Tonya, who was named Most Valuable Player and later earned a call-up to the Kenya U20 national team (Chipu), representing the country in the Rugby Africa Barthés Trophy.
This year, Mwenje promises an even better experience. “We will provide full live coverage of all matches on our Scrummage Africa TV YouTube channel, allowing teams to analyze their performance and make improvements,” he confirmed.
In a rallying call to fans and well-wishers, Mwenje urged support for the event: “We’re inviting fans, alumni, and supporters to contribute in any way—be it financial, material, or even by sharing ideas that can help us improve. Every bit of support goes a long way toward making this tournament a success.”
