MMUST Rugby rose from a slow start to pick a 24-0 win over JKUAT Cougars in a KRU Championship played at MMUST Grounds.
The visitors, who had traveled 409 kilometres, came stronger and tough in Kakamega in the first half of the game. The first ten minutes saw the visitors applying pressure on the hosts, yet unable to make a mark on the scoreboard.
JKUAT’s Godfrey Manamba was substituted by Andrew Muthiani due to an injury.
In the early part of the second quarter, MMUST adjusted their tactics, focusing on scrums, but the visitors’ defence remained impenetrable.
Davis Masinga’s kick from the middle of the pitch narrowly missed, denying the visitors three points. Some seconds towards the end of the second quarter, Washington Ombima’s drop-ball missed the target leaving the score at 0-0 by half-time.

The second half showed a more technical approach from John Asila’s team. Eleven minutes into the third quarter, Joshua Sudi broke the deadlock with a well-earned try after a hard-fought scrum. Unfortunately, Washington Ombima missed the conversion, bringing the score to 5-0 in favour of MMUST.
Two minutes later, the hosts took control in JKUAT’s territory, with Flevian Otiyo diving in for the second try. This time, Ombima successfully converted, extending the lead to 12-0.
Martin Masika then forced his way through on the right edge to score the third try for MMUST. Ombima converted, pushing the score to 19-0.
Masika continued to impress, making a swift run from the centreJKUAQT to the edge and placing the ball between the posts for the fourth try. Unfortunately, Captain Veron failed to convert this one.
MMUST ultimately secured a 24-0 victory.
