Kenyan rugby coach Shimenga tours UK, shares insights on future stars

Kenyan rugby tactician Libondo Shimenga, renowned for his coaching expertise within the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA), is currently touring the United Kingdom to enhance his rugby coaching skills.

Shimenga, an award-winning coach formerly with St. Peter’s Mumias and Butula Boys School, has made a significant impact in developing top talent in Kenya, starting with his early days at Chavakali High School in Vihiga County.

His UK tour further demonstrates his dedication to nurturing the next generation of rugby stars.

Shimenga speaks on his vision for Kenyan rugby

In an exclusive interview with Scrummage Africa, Shimenga expressed his vision for Kenyan rugby, emphasizing the potential of local talent to excel on the global stage.

“I dream of a future where more Kenyan players go professional. We have so much untapped potential, and my goal is to see these kids receive top-level coaching and competition,” he said.

Shimenga’s UK visit is part of his mission to gain international exposure and learn advanced coaching techniques. “I’m enjoying my time here, learning from different structures and methods used in top rugby nations. This knowledge will be invaluable,” he added.

His efforts come at a time when Kenyan rugby is steadily gaining recognition. Shimenga’s passion for the game and commitment to elevating Kenyan rugby talent is clear, and his influence will undoubtedly inspire future players both at home and abroad.

In addition to his high school coaching success, Shimenga previously coached the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) rugby team, which competes in the Kenya Rugby Union nationwide league. His drive to push the boundaries of Kenyan rugby positions him as a key figure in the sport’s growth, both locally and internationally.
