England’s Charlie Ewels faced an independent Disciplinary Committee on 23 June 2024, following a dangerous charging offence during England’s Summer Series match against Japan in Tokyo on 22 June 2024.
The hearing, chaired by Shao-ing Wang (Singapore) and joined by former international players David Croft (Australia) and John Langford (Australia), examined the incident in detail.
Ewels admitted to committing foul play but contended that the offence did not justify a red card. However, after reviewing all available evidence, including multiple camera angles, and considering the submissions from Ewels and his representative, the Committee concluded that the red card was appropriate.

The Committee determined that the offence merited a low-end entry point, which corresponds to a suspension of 2 matches. Despite the player’s submissions for mitigation, no reduction was applied to the sanction. Consequently, Ewels will miss the following matches:
- New Zealand v England – 6 July 2024
- New Zealand v England – 13 July 2024
Charlie Ewels retains the right to appeal the decision within 48 hours of the issuance of the full written verdict.
