In an interview with Scrummage Africa, Odhiambo attributed his scoring success to hard work and expressed his aspirations to catch the eye of the Kenya Simbas selectors having been a trailist in 2023.

“I work hard on this side, and the result was scoring tries. It means a lot to me because I wanted to play hard and be called up to the Kenya National Team, and I’ll keep pushing,” he said.

Odhiambo’s journey is marked not only by personal ambition but also by the collective spirit of his team and their fans. While he views reaching the semi-finals as a respectable achievement, he admitted their target was to reach the final.

“Yes, I can say that the supporters and teamwork were crucial,” he acknowledged.

“Every Hippo wanted to reach the cup final, and the supporters, most of whom are Hippos fans, were instrumental. I pass them much gratitude because, without their support, we wouldn’t have made it that far.”

Despite being viewed as underdogs, Odhiambo and his teammates demonstrated their capability by challenging the bigger and older teams in Uganda.

“For us Hippos, reaching the semi-finals means a lot. We might be small in size, but we’re dangerous, and I hope more supporters will come in, and we will have trophies in the cabinet.”
