KCB’s Mang’eni terms season fruitful, rues failure to utilize chances

Coach Oliver Mang’eni, has described the KCB’s season as fruitful despite missing out on the Enterprise Cup and Kenya Cup title.

Throughout the season, KCB displayed determination and dominance, triumphing over numerous opponents. However, their momentum faltered with a crucial loss to Menengai Oilers towards the end of the regular season, ultimately dashing their hopes against the formidable Kabras side.

They went on to lose to the Kabras in the Kenya Cup final and later lost to the Sugarmen in the Enterprise Cup on Saturday going the third season in a row without a major trophy.

Speaking after the Enterprise Cup loss, Mang’eni who was a key player for the side and won several honours with KCB before turning to coaching said:

“We have had a fruitful season, clinching victories such as the Floodlights and reaching the finals in various competitions.”

“I can say the boys are working hard and making a great effort to ensure we finish as finalists. In the Enterprise Cup finals, we failed to use the Key moments in the field.

Having secured eight Kenya Cup titles, KCB last claimed the trophy in 2021 by defeating Kabras. However, Kabras has since dominated, winning the cup twice consecutively and one in 2016 after their qualification in 2015.

The rivalry between KCB and Kabras has been intense, with the two teams meeting in the final repeatedly since 2017. While KCB initially held the upper hand, Kabras has since asserted their dominance, with victories in subsequent finals, including a notable 32-20 win in the most recent encounter.

Kabras who were promoted to the Kenya Cup league in 2015 have displayed prowess managing to reach the finals in all the overall seasonal competitions and have earned the title of Kenyan Rugby Power house.
