The 2024 Rugby Super Series witnessed the Buffaloes securing third place after their match against the Rhinos failed to commence at RFUEA Grounds as scheduled.

Originally scheduled for 2:00 p.m., the match was delayed to 2:30 p.m. but ultimately did not begin, despite all teams being prepared to compete. Scrummage Africa understands that the Rhinos refused to take the field, citing grievances over unpaid allowances within the competition.

Buffaloes declared

Just moments before the anticipated final kickoff, the Rugby Super Series through its social accounts officially declared the Buffaloes as the third-place winners through its social media channels.

“Kabras Sugar Buffaloes are the 2024 Rugby Super Series third-place winners,” the Rugby Super Series announced.

EDITOR’S PICKS:

The Rhinos’ decision to boycott the match occurred following the Rugby Super Series’ receipt of a Ksh. 4 million commitment from mobile operator Jamii Telecom (JTL) just before match day two.

Of the total sponsorship amount, Ksh. 1.5 million was designated to be provided to the Union in cash, with the remainder allocated to branding. Notably, JTL’s Faiba brand was set to feature on the Rhinos’ jerseys, alongside provisions for internet connectivity and merchandising for the Rugby Super Series.

This marked JTL’s second venture into supporting rugby, having previously sponsored the Safari Sevens last year. Despite the disruption caused by the Rhinos’ boycott, the match between the Lions and Cheetahs proceeded as planned.
