MMUST bag impressive win against JKUAT in Championship opener

Former Kenya Cup side MMUST RFC were off to a flying start in the KRU Championship beating JKUAT 36-14 in a match played on Saturday morning at Kakamega Showground.

The two sides traded penalties early on with Washington Ombima handing MMUST a lead that was cut short by JKUAT captain David Masinga.

MMUST stretch lead 

MMUST then reclaimed the lead when they landed back-to-back tries.  Centre Ian Oduor landed the first try of the 2023/24 season and Ombima added the extras for a 10-3 lead.

The Makaka’s through co-captain Veron Kaburu stretched their lead to 17-3 after a try that Ombima converted.

The second half saw JKUAT come back stronger and trimmed the gap through Masinga’s penalty. He later grabbed a try that cut the gap to just six points.

With the gap trimmed, MMUST fought and responded with two tries from Kevin Bukhala and co-captain Collins Ngoko with Ombima adding extras.

Dave Amani grabbed a three-pointer for the visitors but Paul Odongo came off the bench to send the game beyond JKUAT reach after a try converted by Ombima.

MMUST have five points following the victory.
