Kenya 7s defeated South Africa 17-12 in the Vancouver 7s ninth-place quarters played on Sunday morning at the Vancouver 7s.
Both sides missed the cup quarters, with Kenya finishing at the bottom of Pool C with three points and Blitzboks being edged out by France after both teams tied with six points in the group stage.
In the first half, South Africa dominated by scoring two tries through captain Siviwe Soyizwapi in the second and sixth minute. However, just before halftime, George Ooro scored a try for Kenya at the left corner, reducing the gap to five points.
In the second half, Brian Tanga scored a try that was converted by Anthony Omondi, levelling the scores at 12-12 in the 13th minute. A South African error from the restart allowed John Okoth to seize on a loose ball and run clear to score the winning try.
In the ninth-place semi-finals scheduled for Sunday at 9:00 PM, Kenya will face Spain, while South Africa will play against Canada in the 13th place semis.
