Kenya 7s are set to face Samoa at 2:19 AM EAT in the ninth place playoffs, following their 24-14 victory over Spain in the ninth place semis at BC Place.
The team, led by Damian McGrath, had just secured a win against the USA and were eager to claim another victory to keep their survival hopes alive.
In the first half, Shujaa put up an impressive display, scoring 19 points. The team got off to a great start with Daniel Taabu splitting the defence and scoring the opening try just three minutes into the game. The try was converted, giving Kenya a 7-0 lead.
Taabu then turned provider, setting up Nelson Oyoo for the team’s second try. Oyoo showed great pace and skill, shrugging off his marker to score the try.
George Ooro scored the team’s third try, bringing the score to 19-0 at halftime.
However, Spain came back stronger in the second half and pinned Kenya in their own half. They managed to score two tries through Tiago Romero and Alejandro Laforgo, narrowing the gap.
But Kenya wasn’t ready to give up just yet. Brian Tanga came off the bench and launched a quick attack off a penalty. He set up Billy Odhiambo with a short ball, and Kevin Wekesa was there to pick up the ball off the ruck and score a try.
With this victory, Kenya secured their spot in the ninth place playoffs against Samoa. The team is determined to keep fighting and give their all to stay in the series.
