Kenya 7s failed to pick a single win in Hong Kong 7s following a 10-7 loss to World 7s Series debutantes Uruguay in a 13th-place semi-final played at Hong Kong Stadium.
The East Africans headed to this match after four straight losses and were keen to pick a win against Uruguay who were making their debut this weekend after being promoted to the series following their Challenger Series triumph.
Kevin Wekesa’s opener
Shujaa lead in the second minute when Kevin Wekesa scored a try that Anthony Omondi converted. Uruguay cancelled his try after they scored two unconverted tries through Mateo Vinals and Bautista Basso in the second half to hand Kenya 7s the fifth consecutive loss.
Kenya 7s now shifts focus on the Dubai 7 scheduled for early December 2022 at the Sevens Stadium. They will be keen to sparkle in the remainder of the campaign to avoid dropping into the relegation battle.
The men’s Series will include a record-equalling 11 rounds while the women’s Series has a record seven rounds, an increase of one from 2022.
The competition will be intense from start to finish with the prize of Olympic Games Paris 2024 qualification on offer for the top four teams in the 2023 Series standings.
