Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) has signed a multi-million shilling partnership to launch Pass It Back, a grassroots programme designed to empower Kenyan youth through combination non-contact rugby and life skills training.

Backed by a sponsorship worth over USD 90,000 (approximately Ksh11.6 million) from Menzies Aviation, the two-year initiative is a collaboration between KRU, ChildFund Rugby, and Menzies. It positions Kenya among countries using rugby to drive community development and social change.

Targeting boys and girls aged 11 to 16, Pass It Back introduces World Rugby’s T1 non-contact format, creating a structured and inclusive environment where participants can build confidence, teamwork, leadership, and resilience.

The first phase of the programme, titled Playing for Equality, will focus on promoting gender equity and inclusion. Over 250 youth are expected to take part, with more than half of the participants expected to be girls.

Speaking during the launch, KRU Chief Executive Officer Thomas Odundo said the initiative strengthens the union’s development pathway.

“Investing in the next generation is how we build a lasting legacy and position rugby as a platform for personal and community growth. Our partnership with ChildFund Rugby is also key to improving internal systems and ensuring long-term sustainability,” said Odundo.

The Kenya Rugby Union will oversee the local rollout, including the training of youth coaches aged 16 to 25. These coaches will lead 90-minute sessions that combine rugby basics with real-life lessons, helping young players navigate daily challenges.

KRU Chairperson Harriet Okach described the programme as an opportunity to deliver more than just sport.

“It offers knowledge, instills values, and imparts life-changing skills. We thank our partners and call on all stakeholders to embrace rugby as a tool for transforming lives,” said Okach.

Menzies Aviation Kenya General Manager Mohammed Tambi reaffirmed the company’s support.

“Our investment in Pass It Back is about more than just sponsorship. This is a strategic partnership aimed at empowering youth and leaving a meaningful, lasting impact on future generations,” he said.
