The Uganda Rugby Union (URU) has appointed former South African international Zane Kirchner to the Rugby Cranes technical bench as the team gears up for the 2025 Rugby Africa Cup, which also serves as a qualifier for the 2027 Rugby World Cup.

Kirchner, a seasoned former Springbok fullback, joins the national XVs setup as backs coach. He will work alongside head coach Fred Mudoola and assistant coaches Leonard Lubambula, Timothy Mudoola, and Marvin Odongo. His appointment was made on the recommendation of national team consultant Nollis Marais, who has been working with the Cranes to enhance their technical and tactical performance.

Kirchner’s primary responsibility will be to develop the backs unit as Uganda intensifies its preparations for the continental tournament. The Rugby Cranes are set to open their campaign against regional rivals Kenya.
