Daystar Falcons are the 2024/2025 KRU Championship champions after stunning MMUST 39-12 in an early kick off match at the Kakamega ASK Showground, Kakamega.
With both teams’ promotion to the top tier confirmed, only bragging rights as overall championship winners were at stake for the two varsity sides as MMUST who were playing a walking distance from their home ground looked to asert dominance early.
The Lurambi faithful would impede their own chances as two knock ons would bring an end to continued spells of possesion inside the City boys’ 22.
Makaka would hit first, Veron Kaburu taking a quick tap from five meters out after the referee had signalled for a penalty in the scrum to score under the watch of a retreating Falcons defence. Byron Ogada accurate in his kick attempt at goal to make it 7-0.
The Falcons would start seeing more ball as they plotted a come back, Vincent Omuroka making a nuisance of himself from the base of the ruck, the city based side now sensing cracks in the hometeam’s spirit.
Makaka’s chance to extend their lead would go begging as Martin Masika’s penalty kick attempt swayed wide to the right allowing the Falcons to cut the deficit to four points courtesy of Eddy Wambugu’s long range strike from nearly 40 meters out, benefitting from a scrum down penalty.
Superior scrummaging out wide on the five meter line would allow Omuroka to ground the ball for the visitors’ first try of the evening, Wambugu bending it in with the help of the uprights to put the Falcons ahead for the first time in the clash, 10-7 now as both teams retreated for the shades.
Wambugu would miss another kick as the visitors looked to get the second stanza started on a high before Ogada would miss one for Makaka, both sides looking to get some momentum into their attack at this point.

Falcons would be denied a chance to extend their lead with Chris Obuya’s attempt judged for a held up. Wambugu would then take the City boys’ lead to eight points, capitalising on a mistimed tackle by Kevin Bukhala to slice through Makaka’s defence to score the visitors’ second of the day to bring the scores to 15-7 at this point.
The visitors would continue to capitalise on their ascendancy, scoring moments later from the back of a maul, Wambugu missing the extra two to make matters 20-7 with MMUST looking looking like ghosts of themselves at this point.
A surging Falcons attack would again catch Makaka stretched on the outside, Obuya needing a step inside to burge over the line for a 25-7 lead.
Eddy Wambugu would continue piling on Makaka’s misery in what was turning into a drubbing, slicing through the middle at first receiver from scrum play to dot down a fourth for The Falcons under the uprights, scores now 32-7.
MMUST would pull back a consolation try before an ever dependable Clinton Amukwachi produced another magical moment for the visitors, breaking free on the left wing to run it in from deep in their territory, similar to his semi final try for a 39-12 final score.
