Impala RFC assistant coach Jackson Katunga, popularly known as Kalonje, has exited the Ngong Road club after one season in charge.

Kalonje joined Impala ahead of last season alongside head coach Louis Kisia, and the pair quickly made an impact by guiding the Red Shirts to their first Impala Floodlit final since 2018, eventually settling for second place.

Throughout the campaign, Kalonje stepped up on several occasions to lead the team whenever Kisia was away on national duties with the Kenya 7s setup. Together, they ensured Impala retained their top-flight status at the end of the season.

The duo also played a key role in returning Impala to the National 7s Circuit, where they posted improved performances, finishing 10th with 41 points. Their standout campaign came at the Christie 7s, where they earned 13 points.

Beyond his role with the men’s team, Kalonje also took charge of the Impala Roans women’s program following the departure of coach Mary Ochieng.

“It was a good stay. Keeping Impala afloat after Kenya Cup return and featuring in the entire National 7s Circuit campaign, finishing within the top 10, was impressive. Seeing players like David Nyangige and Amon Bwambok earn national team call-ups was a proud moment,” he told Scrummage Africa.

On his next move, he said: Right now I’m taking a break to ponder my next step, but I’m open to new coaching roles if available.

Kalonje has served as Kisia’s assistant for more than four years, a partnership that began at Strathmore Leos where they helped the side secure promotion to the Kenya Cup and reach two Kenya Cup semi-finals.

Impala RFC are now under the tutelage of Malik Ndemi.
