Maseno University have unveiled Ervin Kanyanya as their new head coach ahead of the 2025/2026 season, which kicks off later this month.

The team, which competes in the Western Zone B, will be hoping that Kanyanya, who in his playing days turned out for Western Bulls before moving to Kisii RFC, can inspire success.

At Kisii RFC, Kanyanya not only played but also captained the side, becoming the youngest skipper in the Kenya Cup league.

However, with the COVID-19 pandemic sweeping across the world, Kanyanya became less active in the sport, eventually hanging up his boots.

In 2022, he joined the disciplined forces but always maintained that he would continue giving back to rugby.

In a previous interview with The Scrummage, Kanyanya said, “This is a perfect chance and opportunity for me to get back to the sport that I love, not only as a fan but in a more crucial role, as head coach.”

Kanyanya began his coaching journey at Kisii School around 2018, working alongside Lee Arstone. He acknowledges that the new role at Maseno is a challenging one but says he is ready to take it on.

“It’s a big role and task; however, I am ready to face it and hope to deliver,” he stated.

Kanyanya has already set his sights on his first-season targets, reaching the promotion playoffs and earning a spot in the Championship League next season.

“My targets and ambitions for this season are to reach the promotion playoffs and secure promotion. This is achievable by winning all our matches, which will help us secure a home playoff,” concluded Kanyanya.
