The Wallabies survived a late scare to edge past a spirited Japan side 19-15 in Tokyo, after nearly surrendering a commanding first-half lead.
Australia looked in control early on, with new captain Nick Champion de Crespigny leading by example in a near-flawless performance, while Hunter Paisami and Jake Gordon also impressed.
Tries from Josh Flook and de Crespigny handed the visitors a two-try cushion, but injuries to Lukhan Salakaia-Loto and Josh Canham disrupted their rhythm and tested their depth in the pack. Carlo Tizzano was unfortunate not to extend the lead, being denied on three separate occasions.

Japan roared back in the second half with tries from Ben Gunter and Shuhei Takeuchi, setting up a tense finish that had Wallabies fans on edge.
Tizzano eventually got his reward with a decisive try, before a late penalty from Hamish Stewart sealed the result, ensuring Australia held on to deny Eddie Jones another famous win over his former side.
