Referee Brian Odiwuory is on the verge of making history as he becomes the first Kenya Rugby League Federation referee selected to officiate at the European C Rugby League Championship later this month.

His selection was confirmed by Middle East Africa (MEA) Regional Director Remond Safi, marking a significant milestone for both Odiwuory and the Kenya Rugby League Federation (KRL).

Brian Odiwuory reception

Speaking to Scrummage Africa, Odiwuory described the news as overwhelming and deeply humbling.

“Honestly, I was overwhelmed. It felt surreal at first, I had to read the message twice to believe it. It’s one of those moments where all the sacrifices, early mornings, and tough games suddenly make sense. I felt a deep sense of gratitude to God, my mentors, colleagues, and everyone who’s been part of this journey. I knew right away this wasn’t just about me, but about representing Kenya and Africa on a much bigger stage,” he said.

He added that the appointment is proof that consistency, patience, and belief truly pay off.

“It’s a dream come true. As referees, we rarely get the spotlight, but this moment shows that our efforts don’t go unnoticed. For the Kenya Rugby League Federation, it’s a sign that our systems are growing and the investment in match official development is bearing fruit.”

As he prepares for the assignment, Odiwuory says his goal is to represent Kenya with integrity, professionalism, and pride while inspiring others to follow in his footsteps.

“Being the first Kenyan to officiate at this level comes with a huge sense of responsibility. I know I’m carrying the hopes of many referees back home who are just as talented and passionate. My aim is to give my very best and open the door wider for those who will come after me.”

He also views the opportunity as a learning experience that will benefit the entire refereeing community in Kenya.

“This opportunity is not just about me; it’s about what I can bring back. I plan to learn from the match environment, professionalism, and game management standards, then share that knowledge with our referees through workshops, mentoring, and continuous learning. My goal is that in a few years, it won’t be about ‘the first Kenyan’ anymore, it’ll be about ‘the next group of Kenyans’ representing us globally.”

Brian Odiwuory preps

In preparation for the tournament, Odiwuory is putting in extra work both mentally and physically.

“Mentally, I’m focusing on staying calm, confident, and present. I’m studying game footage, reviewing the laws, and visualizing different match scenarios to ensure I’m ready for anything. Physically, I’ve increased my training intensity, running sessions, agility drills, and gym work, while also prioritizing rest, good nutrition, and prayer for mental peace and spiritual grounding.”

The St. Mary’s School Yala alumnus had a special message for upcoming referees:

“My message is simple, it’s possible. You don’t have to come from a traditional rugby powerhouse to make it to the top. What matters is your attitude, work ethic, and willingness to learn. Every game you officiate is a chance to improve. I want young referees to know that their dreams are valid, and with commitment and the right support, we can stand shoulder to shoulder with the best in the world.”
