Malindi Turtles once again showcased their dominance after defeating rivals 12–0 to claim the 4th edition of the Lamu 7s Rugby Tournament, held on Saturday, September 27.
The annual event, organized by the Waridi Foundation, was staged under the theme “Sustainable Tourism” a unique blend of sport, community engagement, and environmental conservation.
Although 12 teams had registered, only four featured on the day: hosts Lamu7s, Mpeketoni Girls, Young Cubs, and eventual winners Malindi Turtles.
Each team walked away with a cash prize, with the champions pocketing Ksh. 20,000 while the remaining sides received Ksh. 5,000 each.
Waridi Foundation founder and Lamu County Women Representative aspirant, Jenniffer Waridi, emphasized the vision behind the tournament, saying:
“Lamu is a one-stop destination, its sandy beaches, wildlife, and eco-tourism gems make it unique. Lamu7s combines sport, sustainability, and tourism to open opportunities for our youth.”

The event drew over 1,000 fans, reflecting the sport’s growing popularity across the Coast. Deputy Governor Dr. Mubarak and other leaders pledged more support to local rugby clubs through equipment and training gear.
Adding color to the day, cultural icon and Chief Advisor Susumila thrilled the crowd with a lively performance.
Beyond rugby, the tournament advanced its green agenda through the “Plant & Play” initiative, which saw 5,000 mangroves planted, a town clean-up, and eco-tours to sites like Pangani Forest and Lake Kenyatta.
Since its inception in 2017, Lamu7s has steadily boosted coastal rugby’s profile while promoting the region’s tourism and environmental conservation efforts.
