Mombasa RFC qualified for their first Cup quarterfinal of the season at the Kabeberi 7s, joining Kabras RFC, KCB Rugby, Daystar Falcons, and Strathmore Leos, who all finished unbeaten on day one at the RFUEA Grounds.

Catholic Monks and Mwamba RFC also booked their places in the last eight, while Kenya Harlequin, Nakuru RFC, and MMUST fell short.

KCB Rugby top again

For the fifth time this season, defending champions KCB Rugby topped their pool with a perfect record after edging Nakuru RFC 21-15 in a thrilling encounter.

Mike Wekesa opened the scoring with a burst down the left wing, converted by Brian Wahinya for a 7-0 lead. Chrissant Ojwang replied for Nakuru with a try, but Onyala’s quick tap set up Wahinya to restore KCB’s cushion at 14-5 at the break.

Nakuru fought back after the restart through Bonaventure Otieno’s dummy to close the gap to 14-10, but Festus Shiasi’s converted try pushed the bankers further ahead.

Javan Otieno struck late with a cross-kick finish for Nakuru, but missed conversions proved costly as KCB sealed the win.

Mombasa RFC secured their maiden Cup quarterfinal after a 10-10 draw with Mean Machine. The two points from the draw lifted them to six in the pool, enough to qualify thanks to Nakuru’s loss to KCB.

EDITOR’S PICKS:

Strathmore Leos topped Pool B with a comeback 27-14 win over Kenya Harlequin. Quins had struck early with a kick-and-chase try and added a second converted score to lead 14-5, but Shem Okola’s brace kept Leos in touch.

Second-half tries from Samuel Wafula, Victor Mola, and another from Wafula sealed maximum points for the students.

Mwamba RFC made their way back to the quarters with a narrow 7-5 win over Impala RFC. Joseph Odoyo’s converted try was enough to edge out Amos Bwambok’s response, as both sides defended strongly in the second half.

Daystar Falcons continued their impressive form, topping their pool after three straight wins. A 25-10 victory over MMUST featured a Patrick Odongo brace, with Duncan Olile, Clinton Amukwachi, and Tony Ogoma also getting on the scoresheet.

Catholic Monks sealed their return to the quarters after a convincing 29-10 win over Homeboyz RFC. The Monks raced to a 24-0 halftime lead through a Dennis Mulinge brace and tries from Hassan Wambani and Zephenes Obwanga.

The Deejayz hit back with two tries after the break, but Obwanga’s second sealed the result.

Kabras RFC underlined their title credentials by topping their pool with a flawless defensive record, completing day one without conceding a single point.  The Sugarmen beat Menengai Oilers 28-0 in their pool decider.

After absorbing early Oilers pressure, Kabras struck from a scrum as Brian Tanga set up Mathias Osimbo for the opener.

Rayvonne Ambale then dummied his way over for the second before Tanga added one of his own. In the second half, Osimbo latched onto a kick to score his second and wrap up the win.
