Kabeberi 7s defending champions KCB Rugby, 2024 finalists Menengai Oilers, and Kabras RFC pummeled their opponents in the opening round at RFUEA Grounds, while Mombasa RFC stunned Nakuru RFC with a shock victory.
Varsity sides Catholic Monks and Daystar Falcons also impressed, recording wins to join the big guns on the opening-day winners’ list.
KCB Rugby flying start
KCB Rugby were off to a flying start, putting half a century past Mean Machine in a dominant 54-0 victory.
Despite suffering a late blow on Friday, which saw interim head coach Dennis Mwanja step aside for Andrew Amonde to take charge, the bankers kept their spirits high.
They ran in eight tries and converted seven to claim a massive win and lead Pool A with three points thanks to their superior point differential.
Mombasa RFC picked up a famous victory, shocking Nakuru RFC in the other Pool A fixture. Three unconverted tries were enough for the Coastal side to edge past Nakuru, who managed two converted tries. Both sides now sit behind KCB with three points each.

In Pool B, Strathmore Leos cruised to a 25-7 win over Mwamba RFC. Five tries were enough for coach Willis Ojal’s charges to move top of the group with three points.
The Ngong Road Derby between Kenya Harlequin and Impala RFC ended in a 10-10 stalemate. Despite missing several key players, Quins avoided defeat to take two points from the clash, with Impala also collecting two.
Catholic Monks, eager to return to the quarterfinals after missing out at the Embu 7s, began strongly by beating MMUST 26-7. The Monks scored four tries and converted three to bag maximum points.
Kabras RFC showed intent to shake off their Kabeberi 7s frustrations with a commanding 61-0 win over Kisumu RFC.
The Sugarmen crossed the whitewash nine times and converted eight tries to storm to the top of Pool D with three points.
They were joined at the summit by Menengai Oilers, who dispatched Embu RFC 45-0 to also collect maximum points in the pool.
