The National 7s Circuit kicked off on a high, with Driftwood 7s defending champions Kenya Harlequin, last season’s runners-up KCB Rugby, Kabras RFC, Menengai Oilers, Strathmore Leos, Nondies, and MMUST winning their opening matches.
Kenya Harlequin, defending champions, started life after the departure of coach Paul Murunga with a 14-7 win over Blad Blad.
Two converted tries were enough for the Ngong Road-based side to pick up the first three points of the tournament.
Mwamba RFC, under coach Lavin Asego, lost their opening win against MMUST, who have moved three points in their pool.
Driftwood 7s – Pool B
Kabras RFC were dominant beating Nakuru 26-0, with Lamec Ambetsa opening the scoring off a scrum, touching down at the corner for a 5-0 lead.
The match experienced a brief stoppage that saw Kabras swap kits, but the interruption didn’t affect their momentum. They added another converted try to go 12-0 ahead.
Before halftime, Jackson Siketi switched direction and outwitted the Nakuru defence before offloading to Roy Maruti, who scored and converted for a 19-0 lead.
At the start of the second half, Kevin Wekesa made a break before offloading to Maruti, who grabbed another try and converted for a 26-0 advantage.
Despite losing Mike Lukusi to a yellow card, Kabras held firm to keep a clean sheet and claim three points.
Catholic Monks ran in three tries to claim an impressive 15-0 win over Impala RFC in their opener. With three points on the board, they will be keen to win their next match and secure a quarterfinal spot.
KCB Rugby Win in Pool C
KCB Rugby opened their campaign with a 24-14 victory over Daystar Falcons in Pool C. Dennis Mwanja’s charges struck first, with Festus Shiasi finishing off a move on the left wing for the opening try.
The lead stretched when former Kenya 7s captain Vincent Onyala broke the defence to score, and the conversion took the bankers 12-0 ahead.
Daystar Falcons hit back before the break, as Patrick Odongo pounced on a loose ball and raced clear to cut the gap to 12-7.
A slick backline move saw Eddy Wambugu create space for Odongo to score again, giving Daystar a 14-12 lead after the conversion.
However, former Daystar player Floyd Wabwire came off the bench to score for KCB, who went 17-14 ahead. In the final minute, Shiasi capitalized on a Daystar handling error to score and convert, sealing the 24-14 win.

Nondies dominated hosts Mombasa SC with a 19-0 victory. After four minutes without a try, Mombasa’s Hillary Munga was yellow-carded for tackling Moseti Nyaenya without the ball. Nondies opted for a scrum and moved the ball wide, with Nyaenya scoring and Fidens Tony converting for a 7-0 lead.
Early in the second half, Ronnie Omondi made a quick tap and broke into Mombasa’s 22 before offloading to Nyaenya, with Tony converting for 14-0. Nondies added one more try to seal the 19-0 win.
Pool D
Strathmore Leos overcame a slow start to register a 28-0 victory over Kabarak University. The Leos were held by small errors in the first half but broke the deadlock just before halftime when Samuel Wafula scored on the left side, and the conversion made it 7-0.
Two minutes into the second half, Victor Mola showed blistering pace down the left flank to score, with the conversion extending the lead to 14-0.
Gabriel Ayimba added a centre-post try as Strathmore pulled away, and Mola completed his brace after a feed from Mwenda to close the game 28-0.
Menengai Oilers also secured a 19-0 win over Stallions. The Oilers broke the deadlock with two minutes to halftime, as captain Denis Abukuse scored in the corner and converted. This came a minute after his earlier try was ruled out.
Nelson Makokha missed an opportunity to stretch the lead when he knocked on the ball just before halftime.
In the second half, Fortune Aturo scored a centre-post try, with Abukuse converting for a 14-0 lead. Brian Achacha added a third try to seal the 19-0 win.
