Kenya 7s head coach Kevin Wambua has unveiled a framework outlining the criteria and pathways for player selection into the Shujaa setup.

The roadmap aims to provide clarity for aspiring players, coaches, and clubs, while reaffirming the team’s commitment to developing homegrown talent through structured progression and measurable performance standards.

Key Highlights of  Kenya 7s Selection Criteria

Forwards:

  • Fitness & Speed: YO-YO Test minimum level 18, 10-metre sprint within 2 seconds or less, 40-metre sprint within 5.3 seconds or less, and 100 metres within 15 seconds or less.

  • Skills: Must pass accurately (right/left) over 10 metres, tackle effectively from front, back, and side, and contest high balls.

  • Strength: 1-rep max bench press of 130kg and 2-rep max squat of 180kg.

Backs:

  • Fitness & Speed: YO-YO Test minimum level 19, 10-metre sprint within 2 seconds or less, 40-metre sprint within 5 seconds or less, and 100 metres within 12 seconds or less.

  • Skills: Accurate passing over 10 metres, effective tackling (front, back, and side), and ability to retrieve and contest high balls.

  • Strength: 1-rep max bench press of 120kg and 2-rep max squat of 160kg.

Position-Specific Requirements

  • Props: Aerial capability, jackal prowess, passing accuracy (minimum 10 metres), 70% tackle efficiency, decision-making on attack and defence, and speed.

  • Hookers: Jackal prowess, speed, accurate passing (10 metres both left and right), 80% tackle efficiency, aerial skills, and pod lifting ability.

  • Scrum-halves: Playmaking and organization, 80% tackle efficiency, speed, jackal prowess, passing accuracy, lineout throws, line-breaking ability, and strong decision-making.

  • Fly-halves: Kicking accuracy, playmaking and organization, precise passing, 70% tackle efficiency, speed, and jackal prowess.

  • Centres: Line-breaking ability, 80% tackle efficiency, accurate passing, speed, kick accuracy, jackal prowess, and decision-making in attack and defence.

  • Wingers: Exceptional speed, 1v1 attacking prowess, kick accuracy, precise passing, aerial skills, and 80% tackle efficiency.

Player performance will be continuously monitored based on passing, tackling, contesting high balls, contact skills, attacking and defensive contributions.

Post-tournament player rankings will be based on metrics such as line breaks, pass accuracy, 1v1 tackles, aerial skills, playmaking, floor work, 1v1 evasion, jackal effectiveness, finishing, and decision-making, with total scores determining overall ranking.
