Born and raised in Athinai, Makongeni, Evans Sangura’s rugby journey began in 2009 when he first watched Kenya 7s (Shujaa) play on television.

“Innocent Simiyu was the first rugby player I ever knew. I was motivated and happy because we share a last name, Simiyu,” Sangura recalls with a smile.

Though he didn’t take to the field immediately, the dream had been ignited. Fueled by passion and determination, Sangura knew that one day, he would play the game he had come to love.

That dream started taking shape when he joined Nanyuki School for high school. “It was hard, but I kept training, believing that I’d make the school team one day.”

True to his word, by Form Three, Sangura’s raw pace and fearless attitude earned him a spot on the school team.

After high school, he joined the University of Eldoret (UOE), where his athleticism quickly set him apart. He made his competitive debut at the Bull Ring against Western Bulls in the 2017/18 season.

Under the mentorship of the late Kidiga (a player-coach at UOE) and former Team Manager Kevin Mwisheni, Sangura became one of UOE’s most consistent performers over four seasons, helping the team achieve numerous milestones.

In the 2024/25 season, he made a significant move to his dream club, Nakuru RFC, and made his debut against Kenya Harlequins. Despite battling a knee injury, Sangura remains focused on recovery and is working toward a return to the National 7s Circuit, with hopes of earning a national team call-up.

“I never knew I’d one day play for Nakuru RFC, this is a dream come true. I believe better days are coming, and my dreams will come true. I’ll never give up. I have to make it. I believe I’ll make it one day. Just waiting for God’s time, which is always the best.”
