The Namibia Rugby Union (NRU) has confirmed the resignation of national team head coach Chrysander Botha, who has stepped down from his role just seven months into the job, citing growing work commitments outside rugby.

The announcement was made on Tuesday, 24 June 2025, by NRU President Petrie Theron, who expressed the Union’s appreciation for Botha’s contributions during his seven-month tenure.

“The NRU fully respect his decision and extend our sincere gratitude for his dedication and valuable contributions to Namibian rugby,” said Theron.

Namibia Technical Changes

To ensure continuity ahead of the upcoming Rugby Africa Cup, the NRU has moved swiftly to strengthen its technical team. Former Namibian international Darryl de la Harpe has been appointed as technical assistant.

“A former Namibian international with a wealth of rugby experience and insight, Darryl brings significant value to the team. He will work closely with the coaching staff to support team readiness and on-field performance,” stated Theron.

According to the new leadership structure, Director of Rugby Jacques Burger will now assume leadership of the technical team, as Namibia enters a critical phase in their World Cup qualification campaign.

Despite the coaching changes, the NRU president assured that all preparations remain on course.

“All operational and performance plans remain on track. We are committed to fielding a competitive and well-prepared national team,” Theron reassured.

Namibia will compete in the 2025 Rugby Africa Cup from July 8 to 19 in Kampala, Uganda. The tournament will be played in a straight knockout format, with the winner earning a direct ticket to the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia.
