Musingu School ended a decade-long wait for the Kakamega County 7s title after overcoming hosts St. Peter’s Mumias 24-14 in a thrilling final to be crowned county champions.

This marks Musingu’s first county sevens title in almost ten years. They now advance to the Western Region games alongside St. Peter’s Mumias, Koyonzo High School, and Kakamega School.

Kakamega County 7s qualified

In the girls’ category, champions Mwira will be joined at the regional games by Mukumu Girls, Bishop Sulumeti, and Eregi Girls.

Musingu signaled their intent early in the boys’ final, with Chomoka crossing over for a converted try to give them a 7-0 lead. Despite dominating possession, St. Peter’s took time to break down Musingu’s defense, eventually scoring a converted try to level the match at 7-7.

Just before the break, Musingu skipper Elijah Wasike produced a moment of brilliance, beating defenders from deep in his half to score under the posts and restore their lead at 14-7.

Wasike continued his heroics in the second half, weaving past defenders to extend the lead to 19-7. Musingu’s number nine then capitalized on a scrum opportunity, darting blindside to add another try and take the score to 24-7.

Though St. Peter’s managed a late try, it was not enough to stop Musingu from lifting the title.

Kakamega School lose

In the third-place playoff, Koyonzo High cruised past outgoing champions Kakamega School with a commanding 27-7 win. Four first-half tries powered Eliud Okwemba’s side to an unassailable 22-point lead. Both sides managed a converted try in the second half, but the damage had already been done.

The semi-finals were tightly contested, with Musingu stunning Kakamega 12-7, while St. Peter’s edged past Koyonzo 19-14 to set up the final showdown.
