Rugby Africa has announced the appointment of Maha Zaoui as its new General Manager, effective June 2025.
A renowned advocate for women’s rugby and a seasoned sports administrator, Zaoui steps into the role with a three-year mandate to guide the continental body through its next phase of strategic growth and development.
With over 20 years of experience in African sports management, Zaoui holds a PhD in the Science and Technics of Physical and Sports Activities. Her distinguished career reflects a strong commitment to advancing rugby, especially in areas of governance, inclusivity, and gender equality.
Zaoui previously served as Rugby Africa’s Women’s Rugby Manager, where she played a pivotal role in expanding the women’s game across the continent. She led transformative initiatives such as the Rugby Africa – Sports Management Training Program (RA-SMTP), developed in collaboration with MEMOS (OS-IOC) and LUNEX University. The program has empowered numerous African women in sports leadership, bolstering the foundation for sustainable rugby development.

“I am honored to take on the role of General Manager of Rugby Africa. My vision is one of inclusivity, excellence, and sustainability. I look forward to working alongside our unions, partners, and stakeholders to strengthen financial and operational structures, foster community, build capacity, and inspire excellence in rugby across Africa,” said Zaoui.
Before joining Rugby Africa, Zaoui served as an advisor to the Tunisian Minister of Youth and Sport, an assistant professor at the Higher Institute of Sports and Physical Education (ISSEP) – Kef, and a board member of the Tunisian Olympic Committee. Her international experience includes roles such as Deputy Chef de Mission for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, and Chef de Mission at both the African Games and Mediterranean Games, where she honed her skills in strategic planning, sports diplomacy, and partnership development.
Rugby Africa President Herbert Mensah praised Zaoui’s appointment, saying,
“Rugby Africa is focused on growing the game, particularly through youth and gender inclusion. Maha brings the leadership and expertise needed to advance that vision. She has already played a critical role in building partnerships with organizations like the French Development Agency (AFD) and the French Rugby Federation (FFR), aligning perfectly with our long-term strategy.”
