Koyonzo High School were crowned Matungu Sub-county rugby 7s champions after putting on a sensational show to dismantle Kholera Secondary 51-0 in the final held on Sunday, June 1, 2025.
The victory not only cemented their place at the top of the sub-county rankings but also earned them a direct ticket to the Kakamega County Term Two Games.
Fresh from winning the second edition of the Scrummage Katch 7s where they edged out Kabras RFC’s U19 side 10-0, Koyonzo brought that same intensity to the school games.
In their opening match, they ran riot against Ebusambe, sealing a commanding 42-0 victory. The second round saw Koyonzo obliterate Namamba 45-0 before capping their group campaign with a 60-0 demolition of Munami.

Koyonzo’s semifinal fixture against Namulungu was another ruthless display as they ran in tries at will to win 64-0 and book a place in the final. Awaiting them was Kholera Secondary, who had edged out Namamba 12-5 in a tense semifinal. They sliced through the Kholera defence with ease to claim a 51-0 win and the sub-county title.

In the girls’ competition, St Maurice Mwira delivered an equally dominant campaign to clinch the title. They opened with a 58-0 thumping of Emanani and went on to record a 48-0 win over Ebusambe and a 60-0 masterclass against Munami. Their path to the final saw them brush aside St Agnes Mwira 27-0 in the semifinal.
Koyonzo Girls were the other standout side, starting with a 26-0 victory over St Agnes Mwira. They followed it up with a 15-0 win against Munami before edging Ebusambe 24-5 in the semis. The final between St Maurice and Koyonzo Girls lived up to expectations, but St Maurice proved more clinical and secured a 29-14 win to be crowned champions.
Koyonzo and Kholera will now represent Matungu in the boys’ county championships, while St Maurice and Koyonzo Girls will fly the sub-county flag in the girls’ category.
