Koyonzo overcome Kabras U19 to win 2025 Scrummage Katch 7s

Koyonzo High School emerged as the winners of the second edition of the Scrummage Katch 7s after defeating Kabras RFC U19 squad 10-0 in the final held at the Kakamega Showground.

The final was played on a wet surface following heavy rains during the semi-final stage. Koyonzo, determined to lift the title, grabbed the lead in the first half through Rodgers Alukwe.

Spotting a gap on the right side, Alukwe picked the ball off a scrum and raced to score in the corner, giving his side a 5-0 advantage.

The Kabras U19 side pressed for an equalizer but were let down by multiple handling errors. Koyonzo sealed the win in the second half when Beckham Wangila broke through the defence after a phase from a scrum and dived over to extend the lead to 10-0.

Koyonzo held on to the lead to claim the title and were impressive throughout the knockout stages. In the Cup quarterfinals, they edged Kakamega School 10-5 in a thrilling match that went to sudden death. Koyonzo staged a late comeback to level the scores 5-5 at full time before sealing victory in extra time.

The second quarterfinal also required sudden death, with St. Anthony’s A and Menengai High tied 10-10 at full time. The Kitale-based side scored the decisive try in extra time to win 15-10.

Butere Boys, who had an unbeaten run on day one, exited at the quarterfinal stage after falling 14-0 to St. Anthony Kitale, who showed composure and discipline throughout the encounter.

Kabras RFC U19 were dominant in their quarterfinal fixture, cruising past Otieno Oyoo 33-7 to book a spot in the semis. They then eliminated Kitale’s second string side to reach the final.

In the other semi-final, Koyonzo earned a 12-0 win over St. Anthony Kitale to secure their place in the final.

The tournament drew a large crowd and featured notable guests, including Kabras RFC head coach Carlos Katywa and his technical bench, Kenya Rugby Union Director of Development Ochieng Ahaya, and MMUST head coach John Asila.
